Jost spoke about the purchase on the upcoming May 4 episode of the SmartLess podcast. He and Davidson bought the decommissioned ferry in 2023 for about $280,000, along with a third partner, architect Rob Castellano. The boat had stopped carrying passengers in 2022 after years of service between Staten Island and Manhattan.
Jost explained that the ferry has personal meaning to him because he used to ride it to school as a teenager. He said he texted Davidson about buying it, and they quickly agreed. After the purchase, Jost told his family, including his wife, actress Scarlett Johansson, who was surprised to learn she was now connected to a ferry.
The project has not been simple. Jost said they are still dealing with permits, environmental rules, and other logistical issues. Davidson has previously joked that they are losing money on the investment.
Despite that, Jost outlined plans for the ferry’s future. One idea is to turn it into a floating entertainment space or club. Another is to create a more affordable, community-style venue, similar to a swim club, where families and friends can gather. He also suggested the ferry could be moved seasonally, possibly spending winters in Miami.
Jost acknowledged the financial risks but remained optimistic, saying the project will ultimately succeed.
