The project is currently in early development. Paramount described it as a sequel rather than a reboot, though no plot details have been released. The studio has not announced a director, but industry reports indicate that Dan Trachtenberg, known for Prey and 10 Cloverfield Lane, is a leading candidate. Trachtenberg recently signed a first-look deal with Paramount, which has fueled speculation about his involvement.
There is also no confirmation yet regarding casting. Brad Pitt, who starred in the original 2013 film as Gerry Lane, has not been officially attached to the project. However, given his central role in the first movie and his company Plan B’s involvement at the time, he is widely expected to be approached.
No release date has been set. Based on the current stage of development, a theatrical release is likely several years away, with estimates pointing to late 2027 or 2028.
The new film follows multiple stalled attempts to continue the franchise. Previous versions included a sequel directed by J.A. Bayona and a later iteration developed with director David Fincher. Both were ultimately canceled due to budget concerns and scheduling issues.
The renewed push for a sequel comes amid growing interest in the World War Z property. The video game adaptation has maintained a strong player base and recently released a crossover expansion with The Walking Dead. Paramount CEO David Ellison reportedly identified the franchise as a priority in late 2025, leading to the current development effort.
Paramount emphasized that no footage has been produced yet. Trailers circulating online that claim to show World War Z 2 are fan-made and not official material.
