RFK Jr. Reconciled With Cheryl Hines as Scandal Threatened Political Ambitions, Author Says

A new biography of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is drawing attention for its claims about the state of his marriage to actress Cheryl Hines during a turbulent period in 2024.

In RFK, Jr.: The Fall and Rise, investigative reporter Isabel Vincent argues that Kennedy’s political ambitions played a significant role in his decision to repair the relationship after a public cheating scandal. According to the book, Kennedy’s exchange of explicit messages with journalist Olivia Nuzzi in late 2024 left his marriage “almost at the end.”

Vincent writes that Kennedy pushed to reconcile in part because he believed a second divorce could damage his political prospects. At the time, he was seeking to strengthen his standing with Donald Trump and position himself for a potential Cabinet role. The biography suggests Kennedy also worried about how another high-profile split would be received by his supporters, many of whom hold traditional views on marriage.

The book further claims that the immediate aftermath of the scandal was deeply strained. Hines was reportedly embarrassed by the revelations and, for a time, “barely spoke” to her husband. Public appearances suggesting the couple was stable were described as a calculated effort to minimize the perception of crisis.

Kennedy went on to be appointed U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services in 2025, a role he currently holds.

Hines, however, has offered a different account of the couple’s recovery. In her own recent memoir, she acknowledges that the scandal and political pressures created a serious rift, but she describes the reconciliation as rooted in personal commitment rather than political calculation. She credits a series of candid conversations and their shared dedication to their blended family for repairing the relationship.

Since Kennedy’s appointment, Hines has relocated to Washington, D.C., to support his work. She has said publicly that adjusting to life as a political spouse has been challenging and that she does not expect to fully grow comfortable in that role.
