Rita Wilson Shares Message to Tom Hanks After Cancer Diagnosis

Rita Wilson recently shared a personal message she once gave her husband, Tom Hanks, after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.

Speaking at an event in New York City on April 28, Wilson said she told Hanks that if she were to die, she had two wishes. First, she wanted him to be “sad for a very long time.” Second, she wanted him to celebrate her life by throwing a party where people could share stories and remember her with joy.

Wilson explained that these thoughts inspired her 2019 song “Throw Me a Party.” She said the idea came during a time of uncertainty after her diagnosis, when she was unsure about her future.

The actress and singer underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery after doctors found invasive breast cancer. She has since recovered and marked 10 years cancer-free in March 2025, saying she feels grateful for her doctors, family, and friends.

Wilson also emphasized the importance of getting a second medical opinion. She said her cancer was only discovered after another pathologist reviewed her case, highlighting how early detection can make a difference.

Now 69, Wilson continues to focus on her work and health. Her new album, “Sound of a Woman,” is set to be released on May 1.
