During a quieter segment of her set, a concertgoer shouted a Zaghrouta, a high-pitched ululation used in Middle Eastern and North African cultures to express celebration. Carpenter, who was seated at the piano at the time, appeared to misinterpret the sound.
“I think I heard someone yodel. Is that what you’re doing? I don’t like it,” she said on stage. When the fan responded, “It’s my culture,” Carpenter replied, “That’s your culture, is yodeling? Is this Burning Man? What’s going on? This is weird.”
A video of the exchange circulated widely online, prompting criticism from some viewers who described her response as dismissive or culturally insensitive.
On Saturday, April 11, Carpenter responded on X (formerly Twitter), saying her reaction was due to confusion and technical limitations during the performance.
“My apologies, I didn’t see this person with my eyes and couldn’t hear clearly,” she wrote. “My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended. Could have handled it better! Now I know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out.”
Despite the controversy, Carpenter’s 90-minute set received generally positive reviews. Critics highlighted its elaborate staging and energetic tone, as well as appearances by actors Sam Elliott, Susan Sarandon, and Will Ferrell. She also performed new material alongside her hit song “Espresso.”
Carpenter is scheduled to return for a second headlining performance at Coachella on Friday, April 17.
