Asa Butterfield Calls Unchosen Role a Major Career Shift

A new British TV drama called Unchosen explores life inside a fictional religious sect known as the Fellowship. The dark psychological series, written by Julie Gearey, follows a troubled couple as their faith and relationship begin to break down.

Molly Windsor plays Rosie, a young woman who starts to question her beliefs and her place in the group. Asa Butterfield plays her husband Adam, a devoted member of the sect who is struggling with his identity and inner conflict. The group is led by a powerful and charismatic figure, Mr Phillips, played by Christopher Eccleston.

The story takes a turn when a mysterious outsider named Sam, played by Fra Fee, joins the Fellowship. His arrival unsettles the community and exposes hidden tensions, leading to a wider crisis.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Times, Butterfield described the role as a major change from his previous work. He said Adam is torn between his faith and his personal truth, which leads him to make harmful decisions. Windsor said her character is strong but conflicted, and reflects the experiences of women who feel controlled or unheard.

The actors said the show, while fictional, draws on real-world influences. Butterfield mentioned watching a documentary about the Bruderhof, a real Christian community, to prepare for his role.

When asked if they could live in a sect, the actors gave mixed responses. Butterfield said he could not accept the lack of freedom. Windsor noted there can be a sense of support and community, but also control. Fee said he sees some appeal in a simpler, more connected lifestyle, but would not want to lead others.

Unchosen examines themes of belief, control, identity and power, and raises questions about how far people will go to belong.
