Speaking on the May 5 episode of the podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler, Eilish said she took a public relations training session when she was 14 years old. She described the experience as “scary” and said she cried through most of it.
Eilish explained that she has always been very honest and outspoken. During the training, she was told not to answer questions the way she naturally would. She said she only attended one session, which lasted less than an hour, and did not follow most of the advice afterward.
Although she disliked the experience, Eilish said it still helped her learn how to handle interviews. Poehler told the singer that authenticity is an important part of her public image and that pretending to be someone else would likely feel uncomfortable.
Eilish agreed and said she still dislikes not being fully open in interviews. However, she added that she now shares less about her personal life than she did earlier in her career.
The podcast appearance comes shortly before the release of Eilish’s new concert film, Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), which she co-directed with James Cameron. The movie features footage from her sold-out concert in Manchester, along with backstage moments.
Last month, Eilish also attracted attention at Coachella when Justin Bieber sang “One Less Lonely Girl” to her during a performance. Afterward, she posted on Instagram that she “can’t stop crying.”
The concert film will open in theaters on May 8.
