Speaking on Tuesday’s episode of the More Life podcast, Sorrentino said he had recently left rehab before joining the hit reality show in 2009. He said he struggled with alcohol and pills at the time but did not fully understand addiction.
Sorrentino explained that during the first season he tried to avoid pills and only drink alcohol. However, he said things changed as the show became more successful and the cast started earning large amounts of money.
“The parties were excessive, the women were excessive, the drugs were excessive,” he said, describing later seasons of the show.
According to Sorrentino, he hid his drug use from producers for years. He said he smuggled drugs in different ways, including hiding them in shoes and bottles of fat burners while filming in Miami and Italy.
He also described trying to avoid producers and security staff who were concerned about his behavior. At one point, he said he jumped out of a moving car while castmates Snooki and JWoww were inside so he could get away from security and meet a drug dealer.
Sorrentino said MTV producers eventually changed his contract to punish him if he lied about drug use, but he continued struggling with addiction.
Looking back, he said the production team was trying to help him.
“They were essentially trying to save my life,” Sorrentino said.
The reality star has spoken publicly about his addiction in recent years. In 2023, he revealed he likely spent about $500,000 on drugs during that period of his life.
Sorrentino eventually became sober in 2015 after several attempts at recovery. He has since spoken positively about his life, saying he is proud to be sober, married, and raising two children.
