Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, May 23, the Oscar-winning actress said doctors briefly feared she might have a brain aneurysm just before she was set to film a major performance scene.
Cruz shared the emotional story after the movie premiered at Cannes and received a long standing ovation from the audience.
The 52-year-old actress said the moment happened while she was getting ready to shoot late-night cabaret scenes for the film, where she plays a performer entertaining soldiers.
“I was putting on my wig, and they suddenly told me, ‘Apparently you have some brain aneurysm,’” Cruz recalled during the press conference, according to Variety.
The unexpected warning left her terrified.
“I thought I was about to die,” she said. “It was something completely surreal.”
Thankfully, the scare turned out to be less serious than first feared. Cruz said doctors cleared her the next day and confirmed she was healthy enough to continue singing and dancing for the production.
The actress explained that the experience deeply affected her and changed the way she looks at life.
“I thought, ‘It’s a miracle. I have to value this,’” she said.
Cruz also thanked the cast and crew for supporting her during the difficult moment. She added that the experience reflected one of the movie’s central messages — finding strength and moving forward despite hardship.
The Black Ball features a star-studded cast including Glenn Close, Miguel Bernardeau, Lola Dueñas and Carlos González. The film is competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival and is set to be released in Spain on Oct. 2.
Cruz will next appear in The Invite, directed by Olivia Wilde and also starring Seth Rogen and Edward Norton. That film is scheduled for release on June 26.
