In a new interview with GQ, Holland reflected on a 2021 comment in which he said, “If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong.” Now 30 years old, the actor said he was trying to express a desire to eventually pass the role on to someone else.
Holland said discussions about the future of Spider-Man continue at the studio and joked that he may need to change his earlier statement to age 37. He also suggested the original comment may have been part of a strategy during contract negotiations.
The actor said playing Spider-Man has been “the joy of my life” and added that he would continue as long as he is wanted in the role.
Holland, who stars alongside partner Zendaya, also said he wants a healthier balance between work and personal life. Zendaya recently said she plans to take a break from the spotlight after a busy year of film and television projects.
Their next Marvel film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is scheduled to be released on July 31.
