The announcement was made by her co-anchor, Hoda Kotb, during the March 27 broadcast. Guthrie had stepped away from the show in late January after her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, was reported missing from her home in Tucson, Arizona, on February 1.
The case remains under active investigation, and Nancy Guthrie has not yet been found. Authorities are continuing their search, focusing in part on a masked individual captured on a doorbell camera near the home on the night of her disappearance.
In a recent emotional interview with Kotb, Guthrie spoke openly about the difficulty of returning to work while her family is still searching for answers.
“I want to return to the show because it’s my family,” she said. “I think it’s part of my purpose right now. I want to smile. And when I do, it will be real.”
Guthrie also shared her fears that her public profile may have played a role in what happened. “To think that I brought this to her bedside… it’s too much to bear,” she said.
She addressed online speculation surrounding her family, strongly defending her siblings and saying her sister Annie and brother Camron had taken excellent care of their mother.
The timeline of events began on January 31, when Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home. She was reported missing the next day, prompting Guthrie to leave the Today show to support her family. She briefly returned off-air on March 5 to thank her colleagues. Her first public comments came in a three-part interview aired between March 26 and 27.
Now, as she prepares to return to television, the search for her mother continues.
The Guthrie family is offering a $1 million reward for information that leads to Nancy Guthrie’s safe return. The FBI has also announced an additional $100,000 reward.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation remains ongoing.
