Somerhalder, best known for The Vampire Diaries, said he left acting in 2019 even though it was a very successful and high-paying career. Around the same time, the couple was trying to build new businesses, but things did not go as planned.
He explained that a situation involving fraud left them in what he called an “eight-figure hole,” meaning they lost tens of millions of dollars. Reed played a key role in helping them recover by negotiating their way out of the situation.
To deal with the debt, the couple sold many of their belongings, including homes, cars, artwork, and watches.
Somerhalder said it was difficult, especially because he had just come off an eight-year run on one of the world’s most popular TV shows. His last series, V Wars, was canceled, and he has since decided not to return to acting.
Instead, the couple is now focused on building several businesses and raising their two children. Somerhalder said he prefers this path because it allows him to spend more time with his family and work on projects related to farming, food, and energy.
Reed said she does not see their move away from acting as quitting, but rather as a transition. She explained that they are trying to combine their passions with business and make a real impact through their work.
The couple shares a daughter, Bodhi Soleil, who is 8 years old, and a son who will turn 3 soon.
