Sydney Sweeney Emerges as Surprise Contender for 007 Role

A new twist has emerged in the ongoing speculation over who will play the next James Bond. Director Paul Feig has publicly backed actress Sydney Sweeney for the role, suggesting she should lead the franchise rather than appear as a traditional “Bond Girl.”

Feig, who recently worked with Sweeney on the thriller The Housemaid, shared his view in an interview with The Sun in early April 2026. He said he would “rather Sydney be the next Bond,” adding that while there have been memorable Bond girls, Sweeney has the qualities to carry the role of the iconic spy. He described her as hardworking, intelligent, and strategically minded—traits he believes align with the character of a top intelligence agent.

Sweeney has also shown openness to the idea. In previous interviews, she indicated that her involvement in the Bond franchise would depend on the script, but noted she would find it more interesting to play Bond himself rather than a supporting role.

The comments come at a time when the Bond franchise is undergoing a major transition. Denis Villeneuve has been confirmed as director for the next installment, with Steven Knight attached as writer. However, no official casting decision has been announced for the lead role.

Recent speculation has largely focused on male actors such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Callum Turner, and Henry Cavill. At the same time, Feig’s remarks have revived discussion around the possibility of a female Bond. Sweeney, along with Zendaya and Florence Pugh, has been mentioned among potential female candidates in broader fan and media conversations.

Despite this, longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have consistently stated that James Bond will remain a male character. They have, however, expressed interest in expanding the franchise with strong female roles.

There has been no official response from Eon Productions or Amazon MGM Studios regarding Feig’s endorsement.
