Dwayne Johnson Wears Pleated Skirt at 2026 Met Gala, Cites Polynesian Tradition and Redefines Masculinity

Dwayne Johnson drew attention at the 2026 Met Gala by wearing a black mohair tailcoat with a matching pleated skirt. He walked the red carpet with his wife, Lauren Hashian. The outfit was custom-made by designer Thom Browne and featured more than 350 meters of hand-pleated silk ribbons arranged in what the designer described as a “skeletal composition.”

Johnson said he felt comfortable wearing the skirt and explained that it reflects Polynesian culture, where garments like lavalavas are traditionally worn by men. He noted that in his culture, some of the most masculine men wear skirts.

This appearance continues Johnson’s recent comments about masculinity. At CinemaCon 2026, he said that “real masculinity” involves supporting and empowering women. While promoting Disney’s live-action “Moana,” he emphasized that the story centers on a strong female warrior, and that men should champion women in their lives.

The 2026 Met Gala theme is “Fashion is Art.” This year’s event is co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour. The host committee includes several well-known figures from entertainment, fashion, and sports, such as Zoë Kravitz, Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, and A’ja Wilson.
