Directed by Lance Oppenheim, the film follows the controversial reality TV series that aired in the 2000s. In the trailer, Pattinson recreates Hansen’s well-known confrontations with men caught in online sting operations involving people posing as minors.
To Catch a Predator debuted in 2004 on Dateline NBC and became a major pop culture phenomenon. The show worked with law enforcement to arrest adults who believed they were meeting underage children after explicit online conversations.
The series later faced criticism after a 2006 incident in Texas in which prosecutor Bill Conradt died by suicide as police and the TV crew approached his home during a sting operation. The controversy contributed to the show’s cancellation.
Primetime also stars Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, and musician Phoebe Bridgers in her film debut. The movie is scheduled to open in theaters this fall.
