In a recent interview with Parade, the 79-year-old actress looked back on her career and her first Oscar win in 1980 for Norma Rae. She said it was difficult to process the experience after struggling for years to move from television into film.
Field explained that early in her career, many people did not take her seriously as a dramatic actress. “People wouldn't let me in a room to audition,” she said. Determined to improve, she focused on her acting skills, calling the TV film Sybil a key turning point.
Her role in Norma Rae, where she played a factory worker fighting for labor rights, earned strong reviews and multiple awards before the Oscars. Still, when she arrived at the ceremony, she said she felt overwhelmed. “I couldn't feel anything,” she said. “That whole year was almost too much for me to understand.”
Field also shared small details about the night. She said she did her own makeup and wore a white outfit designed by Bob Mackie. At the time, she had hoped for a more glamorous dress but accepted the designer’s vision.
Although she felt disconnected during her first win, her second Oscar in 1985 for Places in the Heart was different. In that speech, she openly expressed her emotions, saying the famous line, “You like me, right now, you like me.”
Field’s reflections show both the challenges she faced in her career and how overwhelming success can feel, even at its highest point.
