Speaking at the HISTORYTalks event in Philadelphia on April 18, the 55-year-old writer and actress reflected on the long life of the franchise. What began as a 2004 teen comedy later became a Broadway musical in 2018 and a movie musical released in 2024.
Fey explained that each version tried to stay true to the original idea, which was inspired by a nonfiction book about how girls deal with social conflict. She noted that while characters like the Plastics are entertaining, the story is meant to show the consequences of their behavior.
Despite the franchise’s continued popularity, Fey said there are no plans to create more versions. She added that one reason the story has lasted so long is because actors in every version bring depth and humanity to their roles.
The original film starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert. McAdams later said she was eager to be part of the film in any role, but ended up playing the villain, Regina George.
The story expanded to Broadway with music by Fey’s husband, Jeff Richmond, and lyricist Nell Benjamin. A later film adaptation of the musical featured Reneé Rapp returning as Regina George, alongside new cast members including Angourie Rice and Auli’i Cravalho.
Fey also appeared again as teacher Ms. Norbury in the latest film.
Even after more than 20 years, Mean Girls remains widely popular and influential in pop culture.
Recently, Fey has been working on other projects, including hosting the first episode of Saturday Night Live UK, which premiered in March.
