Chrissie Hynde Slams Concert Phone Use, Questions Fans’ Need to Film Shows

Chrissie Hynde is criticizing the growing use of phones at concerts, calling it distracting for both artists and fans.

The 74-year-old Pretenders singer shared a message on social media asking why people feel the need to film shows instead of simply enjoying them. Hynde said she recently discussed the issue with country music icon Emmylou Harris and argued that many concertgoers ignore artists’ requests not to record performances.

Hynde praised Bob Dylan’s no-phone policy at concerts and said audiences should respect performers without needing strict rules. She compared constant filming from the stage to a mosquito buzzing around someone’s head, saying it can be frustrating for artists.

The singer also recalled attending Harris’ concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall, where a fan’s bright phone screen blocked her view for much of the show. She said similar experiences at theater performances and museum exhibitions have made her less interested in attending such events.

Hynde concluded that people have become overly attached to their phones and questioned why so many feel compelled to record every moment. Her comments come as more artists, including Jack White and Sabrina Carpenter, have expressed support for limiting phone use at live shows.
